WHERE DOES
LAURA STAND ON KEY ISSUES?
Covid-19 and related

I want you as citizens to be informed by experts that you can trust and not media giants, political agendas of power grabbing narratives driven by financially incentivized parties. As a person who had (doctor diagnosed but not test confirmed) COVID 19, who knows people who passed with COVID 19 and has talked to countless Michigan based and nationally based experts on this pandemic and topics relating to this public health concern (such as mask usage) and others, I have to tell you that much of what has been relayed to the general public is misleading at best and completely false at its worst. My primary goal for you is to help bring you accurate information - even when powerful people want that information to be discredited or silenced - so you can be empowered to make the best decisions for you and your loved ones. I believe that you are in charge of your health and your body. This has been upheld in American court many times, The Constitution guarantees you your inalienable rights and what is more of a right than the right to decide what happens to your own self? You are in charge of what you do with your body and what is done to your body. You are the one who must care for you. If you don't, and decide only to care for others, you will find yourself sick and depleted because society will not take of you. That is your job. I want all people to be well but believe that begins with your choices.

COVID 19 presented a very scary situation to the USA and our primary goal was to make sure our healthcare system was available to care for sick people in the best capacity we could. Our president told us there was information presented to him that Chloroquine was being used to help patients with great success. He was ridiculed and our Governor OUTLAWED the prescription of this drug. This drug is WIDELY used, accepted and tested for safety and side effects already. She had no authority to do this. A recent study conducted at Henry Ford Health System concluded that this drug improves outcomes by 50%! SO HALF the people that died may have been saved! We need to fix the nursing home policy that killed so many - making up nearly half the number of deaths of Michigan - get this drug protocol available and REOPEN our LIVES.

We did our part. It's time to move forward. Anyone who understands viruses knows it's time to move on.

Governor Whitmer has abused her power and that will be changed by the future legislature if Republicans such as myself are elected or re-elected. She has implemented policy that has cost the lives of people of Michigan and destroyed businesses, life savings and DREAMS. This shows a high level of negligence. The powers of the governor(any) need to be kept in check by the legislature and I will work to do that.

Going forward I want the people of Michigan to be as healthy as they can be and understand the real risks of everything, not just COVID, and live healthier, happier, FREE lives and have real hope again. NO NEW NORMAL. We want a better life with our freedoms intact. There is no guarantee any given day that we will make it to the next. I want to inspire you to live your best life, free of fear, knowing you are in charge of your health. I do not support mandatory ANYTHING when it comes to YOUR health. That belongs to you. I support health education with real data and presenting all sides of each scenario. No solution is perfect but you should be the one in charge of your own health and your child's health.
Education

Your child's health and education are the most important thing next to your own health. Our immediate and critical concern is the wake of this pandemic and what will change. I stand with one solution only. Children need to go back to school with minimal changes. The changes I think should happen is health and hygiene education. Child deaths from COVID is lower than influenza or Non-COVID Pneumonia significantly. We need a real perspective on that. But this doesn't mean children shouldn't learn to understand the importance of health and hygiene. As COVID has taught us, our overall health is a significant factor in being able to survive any severe illness. I will work to make sure education in our schools includes more practical and health related learning for students. Michigan ranks low in overall citizen health and we need to change.

As far as starting on time or how that will look, again, I support business as usual. The data does not justify anything else. For those with family members who have health concerns or are fragile themselves we should provide a remote learning option. Much of that is already implemented in the districts. There are also online public education schools children can attend. Teachers may chose to wear masks, children may as well, but no mandatory masks. Teachers who are medically concerned should be transitioned to head remote learning programs.

Beyond COVID we already had several issues that I wish to address. Funding for Special Needs and teacher training is high on my list. Too many children are slipping through and too many teachers are frustrated with their limitations in the classroom to modify their teaching to fit the needs of the students they have. These issue are at the top of my list to investigate and fix and I want input from you as well. This will be especially challenging with the significant budget losses which will be facing most districts in the coming years.

I believe our school funding system needs a complete overhaul from the ground up. Currently funding is tied heavily to test scores and compliance of reporting. This has to change as test scores and administrative compliance has nothing to do with student outcomes. Communities should have more control over the school curriculum AND school funding! We also need to improve basic education, arts education and skilled trades. Although I appreciate high tech education we have fallen down on basic standards and giving equal importance to all levels of student interest. Encouraging and respecting students who wish to go into the trades, providing high quality special education programs to help kids succeed, and providing art/music education which is proven to improve higher level think order and higher problem solving skills are all essential. Our children deserve to all know they are needed in our world regardless of their career aspects.

This will take a lot of participation from the community but it is essential. It is time we take back education from the government money machine and give responsibility back to the parents of the children in these schools - back to the teachers who are too restricted to teach as they know they can. We need to make EDUCATION great again by bravely moving forward, empowering parents, educators and children!
Economic Growth
As the wife of a business owner/entrepreneur and the daughter-in-law of a great entrepreneur who has built an amazing legacy and employs many of Michigan residents, I understand the importance of business and industry in our state and in our country as a whole. I have also worked as a small business owner and freelancer and understand the challenges of the little guy as well. Whether you just want job security or want to be able to creatively grow your own large or small business I want to help Michigan residents do that. Also, creating competitively priced products in the USA will only help us all while maintaining safety and quality at a much higher level than outsourced goods or imported items.
Michigan must make itself welcoming to new industries both large and small through incentives, programs and policies that give businesses a reason to start - and stay - here. If a large industry can operate in other areas cheaper it will, and take the jobs with it. There is a balance that has to happen, making sure we bring businesses here that are run with integrity and matching the local skill set available. Small business owners need more tools to help grow their businesses and networks should be created, encouraged and incentivized.
As to COVID: The risk of COVID to people in the working age bracket, specifically up to age 45, is VERY low and we should get back to regular work and provide job support to those who are at risk. I support working remotely as much as possible and always have, even before our current issues. This will cut down on building needs (which protects our green spaces) reduces energy costs through less building usage, means less road usage and less fossil fuel usage and will protect people from COVID and other widespread illness. I would also support legal wording to protect employers from COVID illness lawsuits, as employees have to make decisions about their health and relation with the public. This would also include inversely, employee job protection if they must stay home more often due to suspicious symptoms. As a whole it is essential employers and employees move into the future with a common goal of job security, accountability and health for all being a priority.

I also wish to implement policies regarding new construction and land usage. Concrete footprints do need to be limited and environmental impact studies must continue and be strictly adhered to.
Environment and Energy
I am a recurrent contributor/supporter of Clean Water Action and believe water is precious. That links to air and land quality. I do not support businesses that pollute and encourage laws to prevent pollution, encourage recycling and limit everyday waste materials. I support banning-the bag and most other plastics - not only for environmental reasons but also energy/fossil fuel issues and health impacts of plastic leaching. I want Nestle out of MI as they are taking our water without much compensation if any. Besides that, bottles from bottled water are one of the biggest sources of world pollution and a high source of petroleum usage. It costs more to recycle these bottles than creating new ones.

I wish to address our infrastructure issues such as roads, bridges, pipelines, electrical and fuel lines and dams. These must meet safety standards for all people (including emissions) because these are the things your tax dollars pay for - the common use items essential to our safety and functions. As these things impact the environment they directly effect our health and safety as well and should have top priority. All structures should be addressed including those on private property if their structure, use or failure to perform would effect others.

Renewable energy is a different ballgame as the environmental impact is no less severe currently as other forms, they are just hidden from the eyes of the public. All "renewable" energy needs ways to store the energy, which have impacts (ie batteries.) The best way for us to help the environment is to implement good programs encouraging responsible usage and find ways to recover from negative impacts. I want to work with experts to not only give great options to help people change energy and waste habits, but educate and them as well so they can make better decisions. There are a lot of accomplished people in Michigan who are passionate about these things and if that is you, I can hardly wait to hear what you have to say! I vow to do my best to protect our beautiful state, creating beautiful homes, safe roads, and ethical clean businesses.
Education in schools, again, to teach more respect for the environment and teach personal responsibility will also be a priority for me. Encouraging more outdoor activity engagement in students will help change the way they view the world. We have done a disservice to our children by creating a virtual world where everything is unreal through a monitor. We need to get kids outside, encourage more onsite learning and show children the very real impacts of poor waste habits.
I oppose Fracking. I wish to address the overuse of Pharma and how it effects the quality of our drinking water. I also wish to address the problems with other contaminants in our drinking water and how we can improve those situations.
Keep Michigan clean & green!
Elections
Every legal citizen should be able to vote. ID should be required. Onsite voting must always remain available. I do not encourage mail in voting if a person is able to vote in person. I believe Campaign Funding should be completely changed. It's the one area I think would improve government outcomes the most. Campaign money should be publicly funded through taxes (the only tax I would want to ADD) equally distributed to all candidates to be used as they wish and they should be required to participate in several public debates. Corporate and special interest funding should not be allowed. Politicians should vote for their constituents needs and not based on contributions or continuing contributions for their political careers. Politicians need to be public servants and not celebrity dictators. If I could fix our issues without being an elected politician I most certainly will try as hard as possible and if needed, run for office to do so.

When I ran for State Rep I did not ask for contributions and will do my best to use my own personal money to fund my campaign. I do not feel it is right to ask for money to advance myself when so many are struggling to keep afloat.

Equality
The most important thing to helping achieve equality and fair treatment of all people is EDUCATION!. I don't mean traditional school education although that is helpful - I mean going into communities and teaching people they are not powerless. Whether that is providing help filling out paperwork for programs, showing them basic aid that is available, providing job training or onsite medical care or health education, to enriching their lives with social support from mentorships, internships or a network where volunteering opportunities are easily found for any citizen to help families and the elderly. I do not believe lives are changed through regulations but only through education and self worth - along with some caring and compassion. Through education in schools and community programs, people of all ages can learn how important and cared for they are. People need to feel pride in themselves to be happy and successful. Too often we all feel worthless, powerless, unwanted and unimportant. I support programs that build caring and self-worth in all people. I love all "types" of people - a term I hate. Character defines us and nothing more. I support people of all religions, encourage religious freedoms and the choices within those religions. I support LEGAL immigration and hope to make the process easier to understand and attain for those wishing to become US citizens.

Constitutional Rights
The problem of gun violence has everything to do with the previous question of social justice and not much one of guns themselves. I support our second amendment rights. I encourage all citizens to take gun safety courses to prevent accidental discharge injuries/deaths and also, how to handle a gun/when it's an appropriate time to use one whether for hunting or self defense. Criminals will always get guns if they want them so gun laws will do very little to help in that area. We must address fundamental societal issues which cause violent & desperate behavior in the first place, such as education and family support.

I support your right to make your own decisions regarding your body - also known as bodily autonomy. These definitions can be interpreted differently and in regards to abortion, my personal definition is although inside my body, a fetus is a new body and person and I chose to care for it by the actions it took to create it. However, I understand that my feelings are not universal and I feel my position is to support all interpretations including the ones currently upheld by the Supreme Court. That said, I do not support Planned Parenthood as an organization. I absolutely support women's health and access to care. I feel these should be provided with the highest standards possible which means certified healthcare providers and hospital access. We can do better for our women! I support ongoing support of all women faced with difficult health issues ranging from infertility to abortion aftermath to miscarriage, cancer, abuse, harassment and many others.

I support parents and their right to decide how their children are raised. This includes both education and health choices.

I believe the 9th Amendment protects your rights to medical freedom choices and Bodily Integrity (Sovereignty) which is slightly different from Bodily Autonomy. Autonomy means you decide what to do to your body. Integrity is you decide what is done to your body. Medications, treatments, vaccines and even being properly informed as to what is in your food or drink water and having a say in that is part of what I stand for to keep you and myself and our families safe and in control of our life outcomes to the best of our ability.

I put a lot of weight in our Constitution/Bill of Rights and feel it is the most incredible document of freedom ever drafted in history.

To Conclude
These ideas are the framework to which I hope to serve the people of Michigan. I am doing this not to make a career and not gain financial success or esteem, I am doing this because I care deeply for people. This is a labor of love and duty for my country. I wish only to help everyone live their best lives and protect our way of life for future generations. I look forward to serving you and as always, I am here to listen.
